Columbus, Ohio (special) Ohio State Alumni and former basketball star, Scoonie Penn, will score the first basket at the newly renovated St. Stephens Community House Gymnasium in South Linden on Thursday, June 15, as part of the grand re-opening ceremonies for the facility. The event will begin at 11am.
City and community officials will preside over the event, marking the major make-over of the facility, originally built in 1981, and rejuvenated thanks to the assistance of the G&J Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Columbus.
Interim St. Stephens CEO, Marilyn Mehaffie, will preside over the unveiling of the Lonnie Poindexter gym, which received a resurfaced floor, fresh paint, wall padding and a new scoreboard at the facility on East 17th Avenue in the South Linden area. The gym court was named in memoriam of Poindexter, a long-time employee of St. Stephens
Penn will conduct a basketball clinic and sign autographs for approximately 40 kids, who will participate in ball-handling and shooting drills.
G&J Pepsi provided the scoreboard at the original opening of the gym in 1981, and has been a supporter of activities and programs at St. Stephens since the first year that the facility was launched.
