A new youth center located on Columbus’ Eastside will give students a fresh look and renewed confidence prior to the start of the new school year at a Back-to-School: Groom and Glam event. The CAIHS Urban Youth Center, which houses the Youth and Family Services Department of Columbus Area Integrated Health Services, Inc., (CAIHS), will provide free haircuts, hair styling or eye brow styling for school-aged children and a 30-minute Healthier Living Lifestyle class for their parents and guardians, which will focus on the importance of healthy afterschool snacks, routines and attitudes toward learning.
The free event, which is sponsored by Molina Healthcare of Ohio, will feature music, food, games and giveaways for children, and will enable parents and guardians to learn more about the center’s service offerings.
“There’s a tremendous need in Franklin County for youth-centered services that connect with youth through a trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive approach,” said CAIHS President and CEO Anthony Penn. “We hope that this event will help prepare youth for school, a place where many of our youth face challenges on a daily basis, and also provide parents with information regarding behavioral health that can help their children be more successful in their personal and academic lives.”
CAIHS Youth and Family Services Department provides individual, group and family outpatient counseling; comprehensive assessments; alcohol and drug treatment; school-based life skills groups; after-school tutoring; summer camps; psycho-educational workshops; consultation and child psychiatry.
“We recognize that mental health issues can impact and look significantly different in children and teens,” said Maria Houston, PsyD, assistant director of Youth and Family Services. “People are doing the best that they can, but many families are broken, and as a result, youth are experiencing increased levels of trauma. The center is a safe place where youth can receive the tools they need to successfully cope with and overcome their challenges.”
The Back-to-School: Groom and Glam event will be on Monday, August 21, 2017, from 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM, at the CAIHS Urban Youth Center, 1221 E. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio, 43205. CAIHS plans for this event to be the first of many youth- and community-focused events at the center. The CAIHS Urban Youth Center officially opened in June, and is accepting new clients.
