Some people are so afraid to die that they never begin to live – Henry Van Dyke. My view on the idea of black lives mattering has evolved over the last month. This is not at all a call-of-attention to black-on-black crimes, but in the wake of rising racial tensions across the country, I felt compelled to share my revelation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZTYgq4EoRo The Biggest Hypocrite of 2016 I found myself at Kroger in a rougher (but not terrible) part of town. I had to return my Redbox movie–Anything to distract me from the dangers of being a black man in America. This…
When there are apps that find you a ride, apps that you arrange for food delivery, and even apps that help you find love, you know that there is an app for everything.. It should come to no one surprise that there is now an app that will not only find the party but let you take a live peak inside before you make the commitment. This revolutionary app is called Another Night Out or “ANO” for short. ANO was created by Ohio University student Michael Culpepper after he and his friends arrived at a party on campus one night and were…
I feel like I’m in groundhog’s day. I’ve seen this movie before, we’ve all seen this movie before. It’s an equation that is shocking in its simpleness. Unarmed Black person + police officer (or someone who takes it upon himself to be a police officer, shoutout to George Zimmerman) = dead black person, usually with no consequences for the officer who killed them. This isn’t new anymore. In fact, it’s never been new, listen to the OG’s in your neighborhood and they’ll tell you that this sort of thing is as American as apple pie and baseball games. Technology shed…
Two years ago, Prince Kyy was looking for an alternative. At the time, GoldenWave’s creator was attending Wright State, and it was in his best friend’s living room that he realized, like many others, that college wasn’t for him. Kyy and all of his friends rapped and did music, and so that winter, he created a company called Black Square Crew, where he would be the CEO. At the time, the company included Kyy, Donnie Banks, Marshawn McCarrel, and Barbassem. https://www.instagram.com/p/BIRWF9Th881/?taken-by=prince_kyy Kyy brought the idea to his cousin, a financial advisor that was very forward with his opinion. He told…
From his first performance at The Summit in 2014 to creating beats live at Comfest this summer, Satele has come a long way in just two years. Unlike many producers, Satele did not create music with the intentions of becoming an artist. His talents are what brought him to the forefront. “I always loved music and I can remember listening to the radio thinking that I could one day make beats like the ones I heard,” Satele said. Since making his first beat on free loops, Satele’s style has evolved from bouncy Soulja Boy-esque beats to a style he describes…
Mindblowing: The only adjective I feel appropriately describes the experience that is Barcode. In witnessing Barcode, I was anticipating a show, but it was more of a spiritual journey that you kind of blindly venture on. The tour guide, Destin Le’Marr, from start to finish, yanks you up into a whirlwind of soul searching, making it impossible for you to leave the same way that you came. The hybrid narrative is a combination of two worlds where Le’Marr guides you through various factors that contribute to your self-identity and speak to circumstances that we all find ourselves in. “Barcodes are used…
“That’s around the time that your idols become your rivals. You make friends with Mike but got to A.I. him for your survival.” – Drake on “Thank Me Now” https://youtu.be/uDNaVtTzPvg If you asked someone to name the 3 most famous hip-hop artists in the game today, I’m pretty sure the consensus top 3 would be Jay Z, Kanye West and Drake. These gentlemen have transcended hip-hop to become stalwarts in pop culture to the point that any move that any of these rappers make dominates the 24-hour news cycle and dominates your twitter feeds. Jay and Kanye are veterans in…
There’s A Special Election Being Held August 2nd On May 23, 2016, City Council moved to hold a special election for the City of Columbus on August 2nd. This election is focused on Issue 1, a proposed charter amendment aimed at restructuring our current City Council. Presently, the Columbus City Council is comprised of 7 citywide at-large members, a system that has been in place since 1914. However, Issue 1 calls for neighborhood specific representatives which will expand the Council to 13 members; 10 neighborhood members and 3 at-large members. This proposed plan also calls for the creation of Council…
With the August special election less than a month away, Columbus citizens want to know if Issue 1 is the answer to restructuring Columbus City Council, ensuring representation for the interests of their communities. Wednesday night, Central Ohio Young Black Democrats in partnership with the State Of The Community hosted a community conversation at the Columbus Metropolitan Library on the upcoming August 2nd special election on Issue 1. One Columbus (“NO”) and Represent Columbus (“YES”) both provided information and presented their stances on the issue. What is Issue 1? Issue 1 is a citizen-led initiative that would change Columbus City Council into wards made…
