With summer blockbuster movies winding down, I was able to watch DC Comic’s live action version of Suicide Squad. While I enjoyed the fast pace action scenes in suicide squad, it lacked a good story line that actually made sense. The movie starts out, introducing the villains in a “how did they get arrested” backstory. In these stories, you get to see your favorite Caped Crusader and Scarlet Speedster catch a few members of the suicide squad, the rest of the group are caught by law enforcement. Margot Robbie and Will Smith do a wonderful job of not only playing Harley Quinn and Deadshot but also carrying the movie to the finish line with one leg. The two suicide squad members are natural standouts, while the rest are just there to fill up space.
She is easily the baddest mother%&*# in the DC movie Universe .
Another big character in the movie turns out to be Amanda Waller, who is played by Viola Davis. Davis brings an element to the DC universe what Jesse Eisenberg FAILED to do with Lex Luther. She is easily the baddest mother%&*# in the DC movie universe. I just hope whatever contract DC has with Viola Davis has her in every DC movie like Sam Jackson is in with marvel.
The story line for the movie without spoiling anything is, you can’t control evil forever. Even if you have some control over it, it won’t last forever.
“If the comic book movie genre doesn’t fix this problem soon they will be losing fans.”
My biggest complaint with this movie outside of the story line was the main villains. They lacked a true reason to being bad and a backstory. They basically arrive and cause chaos because humanity didn’t love them anymore. This is starting to become a common problem in comic book movies. While we see our favorite superheroes on screen growing and performing greatly, we, often fail to see their nemesis truly stand out. Not comparing the two but, the last villain that stood out in a superhero movie to me, was the Joker from Dark Knight, while suicide squad version of the joker was forgettable. What I’ve seen from comic book movies lately, is having a forgettable villain with a basic reason for being a threat; throw in some special effects of the city getting destroyed with the hero saving the day, and BOOM that’s your story. If the comic book movie genre doesn’t fix this problem they will lose some fans soon. Let’s face it, one out of every ten superhero movies has one villain that stands out. Majority of comic book villains have been mad forgettable.
“The joker is not a B-list character who pops in and out of a movie. He’s either in the movie or not”
…which brings me to the Jared Leto version of the Joker. DC cinematic universe failed The Joker like they did Lex Luther. The Joker is not a B-list character who pops in and out of a movie. He’s either in the movie or he is not. This caused a problem for me because there was an actual bigger threat in the movie. When the joker is in a movie animated or live action his very presences makes him the key vocal point in those films or television shows. This time we not only barley see him but we don’t get to see his intelligence and brutal savagery. What we get is a small love story of a guy missing his girl. Hopefully we get more of the joker in the stand alone batman movie. If we do we can have a better understanding on what type of joker this new DC universe is presenting to us.
While the movie failed in some areas I do see a lot of potential in the characters in the movie. I would recommend this movie if you a true DC fan because you will see these villains in a future DC movie. Overall, this movie has more action than Batman vs Superman but fails just like it with the plot being all over the place. Suicide Squad is an “alright” summer popcorn movie, i recommended you go see it if you have some free time this summer.
