Before scoring big at last month’s MTV Video Music Awards for “Song of the Summer”, Lil Uzi Vert made a splash at Express Live on August 24th, captivating a mostly-high school aged audience. While the event was previously scheduled for earlier in the summer, Lil Uzi Vert fell ill on the date of his original appearance, with the rescheduled show, taking place on the eve of his “Luv is Rage 2” album release.
“You know this a legendary night right here,” he said after taking the stage in an all-black ensemble, complete with a black du-rag. “I gotta play all the classics before they get old to me.”
Backed by his official tour DJ, DJ P. ForReal, Uzi opened the show with the melodious “You Was Right”. His charismatic energy enchanted the crowd, as he jumped across the stage, hitting his playful, signature shoulder bounce. While revisiting past hits including “P’s & Q’s”, Uzi also performed a melody of his stand out features on “WDYW” and “Bad and Boujee”.
With an animated projection on a large screen as his background, Uzi was interactive with the crowd, volleying a large purple inflatable ball back and forth with them. He also encouraged them to mosh and flip the bird as “Top” played. Grabbing a fan’s phone to capture the electrified audience, Lil Uzi Vert connected with a crowd of 2,000 throughout the night, performing acapella at brief moments and even giving a taste of “Luv is Rage 2”, which dropped at midnight.
As he launched off into “Sauce it Up”, while the audience was newly familiar with the vibrant “Sauce it Up”, they were able to keep up, becoming instant fans of the track from Uzi’s debut album.
While it was once “Lil Uzi vs. the World”, his performance at Express Live was accepting of all in attendance. As the show winded down with his summer hit “XO Tour Llif3”, wails from the crowd proved that Lil Uzi Vert has rightfully proved he belongs in the music of today.
